Effective March 25, 2025, no additional points (50 or 200) will be assigned for valid job offers.

This is a temporary measure taken by the Canadian government to combat fraud. At this time, the end date for this measure has not been announced. While the points have been removed, some Canadian immigration programs still require a valid job offer for eligibility. For example, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, the Federal Skilled Worker Program, and some streams under provincial nominee programs. Therefore, in many instances, having a valid job offer or arranged employment in Canada remains an important eligibility criterion, and employers can thus sponsor workers in appropriate cases. Contact us for more details.

Candidates who received an invitation to apply for permanent residence (ITA) prior to the change, i.e., before March 25, 2025, can still claim job offer points. All other Express Entry candidates with valid Express Entry profiles and job offers, but who do not have an ITA and no application in process, are no longer eligible for additional points effective March 25, 2025. Book a consultation with an immigration lawyer if you are impacted by the change and need to reassess your immigration options to Canada.

The content below is no longer current and is provided for archival purposes. Only candidates who received ITAs before March 25, 2025, can rely on this information.

The higher an individual's Express Entry Points under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS Score), the better chance they have of being invited to apply for Canadian permanent residence. Having a job offer from Canada significantly increases one's CRS Score, bringing them closer to immigrating to Canada and gaining permanent resident status. A "Valid Job Offer" or "Arranged Employment" can increase their CRS Score by adding 50 or 200 Express Entry Points. Below, it is explained how many points one can gain for a job offer in Express Entry and what the requirements are. There are three scenarios when a foreign skilled worker can claim additional points for a job offer.

How Many Points for a Job Offer in Express Entry Can One Get?

Foreign nationals who are offered employment in Canada can get:

  • 200 CRS points for an offer of employment in a NOC TEER 0 (Major Group “00”) job. For example, when senior managers, executives, self-employed entrepreneurs, or business owner-operators get a job offer in Canada. Only candidates with a valid job offer in the following six occupation categories can obtain 200 points: NOC 00010 – Legislators; 00011 – Senior government managers and officials; 00012 – Senior managers - financial, communications, and other business services; 00013 – Senior managers - health, education, social and community services, and membership organizations; 00014 – Senior managers - trade, broadcasting, and other services; 00015 – Senior managers - construction, transportation, production, and utilities.
  • 50 CRS points for an offer of employment in a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 job. For example, when middle managers or professionals get a job offer in Canada.

What Are the Three Ways to Earn Between 50 to 200 Points?

It is not sufficient just to be offered a job in Canada. In addition to that, there are certain requirements that must be met before a foreign national can claim Express Entry job offer points. These requirements vary and can generally fall under one of the three categories:

Scenario 1 – The Canadian Employer Receives a Positive LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) to Support the Foreign National's Permanent Resident Visa Application

A foreign national is not required to work in Canada until their PR application is approved (but may be working if they have authorization). At the time of application for a permanent resident visa, the LMIA must be valid, i.e., less than six months must have passed since the LMIA issuance date. A foreign national can claim an additional 50 or 200 Express Entry points if the following requirements are met:

  • The Department of Economic and Social Development of Canada / Service Canada issues a positive LMIA to support the permanent resident visa (or dual intent LMIA) that approves the job offer and names the foreign national and their position.
  • The foreign national's prospective or current employer (i.e., the one notified on a positive LMIA) makes them a job offer that meets the following requirements:some text
    • Be in writing
    • Not be from an embassy, high commission, or consulate in Canada
    • Set out details of the job, such as pay and deductions, duties, and job conditions
    • Made by one employer (or by up to two employers if the offer is in an eligible skilled trade occupation)
    • Continuous
    • Paid
    • Full-time (at least 30 hours a week)
    • For at least one year after IRCC issues a permanent resident visa
    • In a job that is NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3

Scenario 2 – The Foreign National Works in Canada on an LMIA-Based Work Permit, and the Work Permit Is and Will Be Valid Until the Permanent Resident Visa Is Approved

A temporary foreign worker must be working for the same Canadian employer until their PR application is approved. The LMIA itself may have expired (i.e., more than six months passed since the issuance date), and a new one is not required in Scenario 2. A foreign national can claim an additional 50 or 200 CRS points if the following requirements are met:

  • The foreign national is a holder of a valid Work Permit issued based on LMIA.
  • The foreign national is currently working in Canada in a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 job on an LMIA-based Work Permit.
  • The foreign national is currently working for an employer listed on the LMIA-based Work Permit.
  • The LMIA-based Work Permit must be valid until the foreign national is accepted as a permanent resident.
  • The foreign national is authorized to work in Canada on the day they apply for a permanent resident visa and when the permanent resident visa is issued.
  • The foreign national's current employer (i.e., the one notified on a valid LMIA-based Work Permit) makes them a job offer that meets the following requirements:some text

Scenario 3 - The Foreign National Has a Valid LMIA-Exempt Work Permit and Has Worked for at Least One Year in Canada for the Same Employer

A foreign national can claim an additional 50 or 200 Express Entry points if the following requirements are met:

  • The foreign national is a holder of a valid Work Permit that is exempt from needing LMIA.
  • The foreign national has gained one year of full-time work experience (or an equal amount of part-time work) for the employer specified in the valid LMIA-Exempt Work Permit (exemption under an international agreement, a federal-provincial agreement, or the “Canadian interests” category).
  • The foreign national's current employer (i.e., the one notified on a valid LMIA-Exempt Work Permit) makes them a job offer that meets the following requirements:some text

For example, a business owner who worked in Canada in a senior managerial capacity on an Intra-Company Transfer Work Permit, which is LMIA-exempt, can claim an additional 50 or 200 CRS points for a valid job offer to immigrate through Express Entry under the Federal Skilled Worker program.

"Lena is the best attorney I have ever met in Canada and the US! I have an extremely challenging case for my parents' tourist visas to Canada, as they were previously rejected for a US tourist visa. Most people believed there was only a 10% chance of winning, but Lena never gave up. She tirelessly fought for my family day and night, and we won! I can't believe my parents' visas got approved! Her professional knowledge cannot be adequately described as just "professional." She is at the top of her field, the best of the best! Additionally, she is a beautiful and kind lady who is also very diligent and responsible when handling her clients' tasks. I will continue to hire her for my PR case. Choosing Lena was the smartest and wisest decision of my life!"

"We applied for an ICT visa from China to Canada with the intention of obtaining approval for me to work in my Canadian affiliate, along with my family, to move to Toronto, Canada. Due to the complexity of my company's structure and the recent establishment of the Canadian branch, we were worried the plan for me to relocate from China to Canada might not be approved. Before proceeding, we conducted research and communicated with seven different companies and lawyers. Ultimately, we chose Lerom Law, and it was Lena who handled our case. From the very first contact, Lena impressed us with her professionalism and in-depth knowledge of various Canadian policies, especially in regard to the company relocation aspect that I was concerned about, as well as the subsequent Permanent Residency (PR) conversion process and other areas where we struggled to find reliable information elsewhere. Lena's insights were spot-on and highly professional, which made us choose her without hesitation. Throughout the entire project coordination, working with Lena was highly efficient and organized. She provided excellent guidance in terms of document preparation, organization, and review, as well as prioritizing tasks and responding to our questions and concerns. Everything progressed smoothly. The Canadian IRCC has strict requirements for the application materials, and it demands a significant amount of time and effort from applicants. However, we feel fortunate to have had Lena's assistance as she saved us from many potential pitfalls and ultimately helped us secure the ICT visa. I am writing this review to express my gratitude and commend Lena's exceptional services. I sincerely recommend Lerom Law and Lena to anyone in need of similar visa services."
