A foreign national who gained at least two years of work experience in the past five years as a self-employed in cultural activities, for athletics, or through managing a farm may be eligible to apply for permanent residence under the Self-Employed Persons Program.
There are several criteria in Athletics at a World-Class Level Programm. These criteria determine an applicant’s experience, intention and ability to create their own employment in Canada:
Self-employed experience in athletics or cultural activities.
This category includes, for example, painters, music teachers, illustrators, freelance journalists, filmmakers. Besides, the category intends to capture different behind the scenes jobs, like set designers, choreographers, trainers and coaches.
Participation at a world-class level in cultural activities or athletics intends to capture performers.
This comprises those who perform in the world of sport and the arts. “World class” means a person who is famous internationally. It also applies to persons who may not be popular worldwide but perform at the highest levels in their discipline. Note that to be eligible you must have:
- Two one-year periods taking part at a world-class level in athletics, or
- Two one-year periods os self-employment in athletics, or
- A combination of a one-year period described in A above, and a one-year period described in B above.
Making a major artistic input or cultural life or athletics for the self-employed class is going to enrich Canadian culture and sports sector. When applicants have a great level of experience, ability, and right intent, there is a reasonable prospect that they have self-employment in culture or sport. Note that if an applicant does not meet the regulatory definition of a self-employed person, he or she will be refused without further review.
